John Abbott College Conversations: An interdisciplinary approach to health promotion and retention in Quebec’s regions

This project supports JAC health students in gaining practical experience while strengthening their language and professional skills.

Students, under the supervision of their instructors, provide on-site health care and guidance to community members in the regions, exposing them to real-world healthcare practice. They also have opportunities to meet local employers and learn about job prospects, while sharing their experiences studying health care at JAC with prospective students in the community.

French mentors are assigned to clinical areas, including hospitals and simulation labs, to support students in developing their French communication skills. These mentors assist students in interacting with staff and French-speaking clients, helping to build confidence and fluency in a professional setting.

By combining hands-on healthcare experience with language development, the project prepares students to successfully integrate into the Quebec workforce, enhancing both their employability and ability to provide quality care in French-speaking clinical environments after graduation.
