Bridging Words, Building Care: A Bilingual Exchange for Future Speech-Language Pathologists
This project creates a bilingual language exchange program for Speech-Language Pathology students at McGill University and Université de Montréal, led by bilingual SLPs. The program aims to strengthen professional language proficiency in English and French, preparing students for bilingual clinical practice. Monthly meetings throughout the fall, winter, and spring/summer semesters include structured discussions, case-based learning, and group activities to enhance both linguistic and cultural competence. By engaging with peers from different linguistic backgrounds, students develop communication and cultural skills essential for providing quality care in anglophone and francophone communities. The initiative also fosters inter-university collaboration, allowing students to learn from diverse perspectives while supporting their professional growth. By equipping future SLPs with the confidence and practical skills required for bilingual practice, the project contributes to improved healthcare access and outcomes for Quebec’s English- and French-speaking populations.
